Strictly Come Dancing - Saturday 9th October Leaderboard

All the couples have danced and the final leaderboard is as follows:

1. 63 points - Pamela & James
2. 62 points - Matt & Aliona
2. 62 points - Kara & Artem
4. 61 points - Scott & Natalie
5. 56 points - Jimi & Flavia
6. 50 points - Tina & Jared
6. 50 points - Patsy & Robin
6. 50 points - Michelle & Brendan
9. 48 points - Felicity & Vincent
10. 47 points - Gavin & Katya
11. 46 points - Goldie & Kristina
12. 38 points - Peter & Erin
13. 37 points - Paul & Ola
14. 29 points - Ann & Anton

No bottom two this week, I think Goldie or Peter are the ones in trouble.  Who do you think is going to go?

Strictly Come Dancing - Saturday 9th October

As a change this week I've decided to blog my analysis all in one post, it'll make it easier for you guys reading too.

However I will post links as I go so you may need to refresh the page to see each new comment if you're watching live (well I'm starting about half an hour late!).

No dance offs this year, a bad move I think if we're left with Ann Widdecombe for 10 weeks!

First up, Matt Baker & Aliona Vilani Foxtrot.

A great performance last week, let's see how their Foxtrot goes this week.  Looks like they're going for an intense, almost Tango, feel to the dance (Emma's not sure on the beard).  Overall it does feel more like a Tango than a Foxtrot and whilst it's danced well I'd prefer a more smooth feel.  His arms can sometimes be a little too straight.  Very strange ending, almost looked like a mistake!

I'll only give it a 7 - I may be being harsh, but.it didn't feel like a Foxtrot to me.

Craig: 7 "Very sharp and very cleaning, ending was too hard"
Len: 8 "You shouldn't come out dancing that well in week 2"
Alisha: 8 "A tad serious, reminded me a bit of Tango"
Bruno: 8 "I've never seen a Foxtrot danced with so much passion"

Total score: 31 points

Peter Shilton & Erin Boag Salsa

Training hasn't looked good I'm afraid and the wiggle at the start is just wrong.  I don't really know what to say, Peter's worn out and there's not a sign of hips or a good arm movement - he is smiling though!  Really shouldn't be left on his own.  I hate to say it but I think I've seen the worst dance we're going to see tonight...well until Ann comes on anyway.

Shame as I like Erin, but I think she could be going out this week.  A 4 from me this week I'm afraid.

Craig: 3 "Very stompy, very wooden...deliberate and child-like...looked like you'd broken your ankle"
Len: 5 "Salsa is all about fun, rhythm, hip action...a lot of it you were just standing around too much"
Alisha: 5 "I don't think Latin is your strong point...you seem a lot more confident this week"
Bruno: 4 "I don't know if it was a wise decision to attract attention to your bum with that football"

Total Score: 17

Tina O'Brien & Jared Murillo - Foxtrot

Already looking a lot better than last week, mistake in the Feather Step at the start though, rise and fall seems to be out of sync.  It still feels like a very introvert performance.  Good spins near the end, though Tina looked like she was going to fall as Jared got her back in hold.  Overall a better performance than last week but I still feel that there's a serious lack of charisma to their dancing.

An ok performance but fairly uninspiring, I'll give it a 6.

Craig: 6 "Your timing got out a little bit...you were out of time together...ending spin was very good"
Len: 6 "As a performance I thought it was very good...in hold it lacked a bit of movement around the floor"
Alisha: 7 "You seem to be growing in confidence...much better than last week"
Bruno: 7 "You were trying so hard to get your frame right that it looked like you had a neck brace on"

Total Score: 26

Patsy Kensit & Robin Windsor - Salsa

Only 3 hours of training this week, doesn't bode well though training looked good.  A little too stompy at the start and doesn't really have much by the way of Salsa basics - lots of walking around waving arms.  A less nervous performance than last week but you can tell there's been a lack of training.

Only a 6 from me.

Craig: 7 "Compared to last week which was appalling...I thought the 'desk' moment was unnecessary"
Len: 7 "You've come out and took command of the floor...it did need more polish"
Alisha: 7 "You came out and attacked the dance"
Bruno: 7 "You found your confidence, it's something to build on. Watch your turns [and] Cuban motion"

Total Score: 28

Paul Daniels & Ola Jordan - Foxtrot

Looking quite nice up on stage, elegant and calm.  Not quite as good in hold though, Paul needs to get his chin up and keep the shoulders down.  There's no real rise and fall and the footwork's pretty bad.  However I think a much better performance than last week.

An improvement on last week and I'm going to give it a 5.

Craig: 4 "Had some rise and fall in the beginning, then it disappeared...you're looking down which I hate"
Len: 6 "A tad pedestrian here and there...better than last week"
Alisha: 6 "Ballroom definitely suits you more than Latin"
Bruno: 5 "There are some sections that are actually not bad...some sections you go around aimlessly"

Total Score: 21

Scott Maslen & Natalie Lowe - Salsa

Interesting costume choice, I'd expect it more for Jive than Salsa.  A good start on the bridge but I still feel like there's a lack of emotion on his face.  A Swayze inspired leap from the stage, but the floorwork looked a little laboured.  Nice hip action though and he's finally starting to liven up.  Some very complicated 'armography' though.

A good performance, I still want more from him on an emotional level and energy.  A good 7 though.

Craig: 8 "Flame grilled, red-hot"
Len: 8 "All the way through I'm thinking 'Go on my son'...a really good Salsa, well done"
Alisha: 8 "Nice to see you really going for it...good hip action...as good as your Ballroom"
Bruno: 8 "So strong, so tight, so footloose...always your eye on the prey cos you know you're going to get it"

Total Score: 32, hmm

Michelle Williams & Brendan Cole - Foxtrot

A surprise visit from Kelly Rowland appears to perk Michelle up, let's see if it translates to the dance floor.  Michelle still looks like she's forcing movements, Brendan does a marvellous full length slide down the banisters though.

Once Michelle is in hold there is improvement though, however she does need to watch her left shoulder.

Overall again a much better performance than last week and worthy of a 6.

Craig: 6 "Top line was tense, shoulders were raised, pigeon toed...but you put a lot of hard work and effort in"
Len: 7 "Far superior performance to last week...I thought you did a great job and well done"

Alisha: 7 "It's nice to see you in a Ballroom gown...I'm not 100% relaxed when I watch you dance"

Bruno: 6 "Who slipped?...don't raise your shoulders, the shoulders stay down"

Total Score: 26

Goldie & Kristina Rihanoff - Foxtrot

Could be a bit smoother in the initial walk in, the crosses across the floor started well but he'd lost it by the time he got in front of the judges.  Looks very uncomfortable in hold and needs to keep his bum in.  Again once he's out of hold there's a massive improvement in his dancing - not a good sign when you're dancing in a partnership competition like this.

As Emma puts it 'not hideous'.  If he'd been better in hold this could have been a 7 but I think only a 6 for me.

Craig: 6 "Your weight was a little too far back when you took your heel leads...still needs work but it's getting there"
Len: 7 "It was more brassy than golden Goldie...I thought it was a far superior performance than last week"
Alisha: 7 "I think you put your own little Goldie swagger on the routine"
Bruno: 6 "I liked the beginning and the end...you didn't get your frame right"

Total Score: 26

Pamela Stephenson & James Jordan - Salsa

Out of all the training videos I've seen this has looked to be the best, let's hope they continue it on the dance floor.  I'm still not a fan of the prop-based starts but some nice hip action once they start dancing and some very good turns, though I almost feel like it could be faster.  I wouldn't have done the floor spin, a fact supported by her almost falling.

A shame about the loss of balance as that was a great dance.  I'm still going to give it an 8 though.

Craig: 8 "Darling you went off like a firecracker...fantastic rhythm...hip action...you claimed the floor once again"
Len: 8 "The confidence you came out on the floor with...you coped with both of them [Waltz & Salsa] brilliantly"
Alisha: 8 "That had everything I expect from a Salsa...best of the night"
Bruno: 8 "Stumble apart you're the only person tonight that managed to convey the correct balance of rhythm and fluidity of the Salsa"

Total Score: 32

Felicity Kendal & Vincent Simone - Foxtrot

I still don't think the music was the best choice for a Foxtrot but it does give a nice sweet feeling, though it lacks a little excitement at the start.  It's a little too safe and boring for the majority of the routine, I would have preferred a bit more contrasting rhythms.

For me it was too safe and I'm going to give it a 6.

Craig: 6 "Lovely Spanish lines...open your hip out a bit more...smoother transitions between steps"
Len: 6 "Everything's ok but everything needs to improve slightly...little bit better than last week"
Alisha: 6 "For me overall it was a little bit average...I think you're a capable dancer"
Bruno: 7 "It was classy...a bit stately at times...you have to push it a level further"

Total Score: 25

Ann Widdecombe & Anton Du Beke - Salsa

I honestly thought they were going to leave this one to the end, especially with Anton bringing out the chest - thank God Ann put it away again.  Well aside from the lack of balance at times, complete lack of hip action and the sight of Anton trying to go under Ann's arms, it still has it's own charm.  Impressed at Anton lifting her at the end.

I'm going to be generous and give her a 5 though.

Craig: 1 "[Ann - don't bother, it's over, you haven't got a 0 so you may as well give us a 1 and get it over with] There is not one word in the English language that could describe what 10m people have just witnessed"
Len: 4 "It was a bit like the Hokey Cokey, you put your left foot in...but there wasn't much shaking about"
Alisha: 4 "It might not have been a Salsa but it was highly entertaining"
Bruno: 3 "It was unique and compelling, somewhere between horror and comedy"

Total Score: 12 (Is that the lowest score ever??? Apparently it's the lowest for the Salsa at least)

Kara Tointon & Artem Chigvintsev - Foxtrot

A great, flexible and elegant start, is it me or do most of the Foxtrots this week have Tango based beats?  It looks good though, her head is slightly out on occasion but overall a lovely performance.

I think I'll have to give this an 8 as well.

Craig: 7 "I thought you danced that very, very well...relax your left index finger darling"
Len: 8 "You did a heel turn...she did it beautifully"
Alisha: 9 "You are a fine dancer, that was a stunning routine"
Bruno: 8 "Mission accomplished Mr Bond...the chemistry between you two could power a nuclear power station"

Total Score: 32

Gavin Henson & Katya Virshilas Salsa

A bit too much running around at the start, but some nice hints of hips there.  Gavin does need to isolate his lower half of his body from his top half.

Better than I expected, but not really good enough.  I'm going to give it a 6 though.

Craig: 3 "Three fundemental flaws...timing...rhythm...hips, three things you definitely must work on"
Len: 6 "Have a bit of decorum...last week you were so good...unfortunately you didn't live up to the promise"
Alisha: 5 "I was a little bit disappointed...your muscles didn't distract me"
Bruno: 5 "You look self-conscious...the six pack is not enough"

Total Score: 19

Jimi Mistry & Flavia Cacace - Foxtrot

Needs to be careful about bunching his hands into fists and his head's a little too high when in hold.  A very nice performance though, calm and controlled.

Not quite an 8 for me but a very good 7.

Craig: 7 "I thought you were leading Flavia well...you danced all those wonderful little accents...well done"
Len: 7 "I didn't think I was going to like it...all the messing around on stage...the more it went on....I began to enjoy it"
Alisha: 8 "I loved you throughout that dance...it was a very sexy Foxtrot"
Bruno: 8 "At the beginning I thought you were going into a Full Monty...you're a great performer and it shows"

Total Score: 30

It Takes Two - Tuesday 5th October-Friday 8th October

Due to an unfortunate virus attack on my computer I've been unable to upload my analysis all week so I've decided to collate all 4 episodes into one post.

Tuesday 5th October

First up Goldie & Kristina Rihanoff to talk about their Cha-Disco-Cha.  Personally I think it was an awful choice for a first dance, though they seemed to enjoy it, it really didn't resemble a Cha Cha Cha.

Goldie then confirms that 'yes, it is easier to dance with a professional', something which I'm sure any number of our students would agree with.

A VT then follows of Goldie as various movie characters, including some rather [un-]charming burping.

Goldie has a Foxtrot this weekend, though it looks rather Paso-esque in the clip they show.

Choreography Corner

Karen Hardy then comes on for Choreography Corner.  She likes props, I think it's a cover-up to hide other problems.

First up a few basic tips, important for all.  Matt Baker is commended for his leading; Felicity Kendal for her flexibility; Patsy Kensit is kept basic to give her confidence; Paul Daniels safely starts with a magic trick; Scott Maslen for a strong and dominant 'raunchy' Waltz; Goldie entertains but shouldn't have been left on his own this early on; Pamela Stephenson stole the show with an elegant Waltz.  More from Karen later...

Pamela Stephenson & James Jordan

My favourite couple from the weekend they really performed a gorgeous Waltz.  James "Everything come together for a great dance", aside from his use of English I can't commend his routine enough.

I thought I had a big head from James definitely gives me a run for my money, though I might start utilising the press-ups penalties on some of my students.

Pamela looks like she's enjoying the Salsa training and she did a good job in the launch show so I'm expecting another good dance.

Choreography Corner (part 2)

Karen returns for part 2 of her choreography analysis.

Ann Widdecombe's kick in the air was Anton's way of using her inability to keep her feet on the floor; Jared makes Tina O'Brien's routine too simple and sweet; Kara Tointon has such a packed routine and pulls it off with aplomb; Gavin Henson surprised me with his Waltz and Karen commends the basic routine in showing off the technique; Michelle Williams started brightly on the bridge but strutted later on, and needs much more technique; Peter Shilton was nervous and petrified, "did well but nerves took over"; Jimi Mistry over-enthusiastic and on his own too much.

Felicity Kendal & Vincent Simone

Felicity didn't want to start the show and concentrated more on "not falling over" than remembering her technique.

Giggling appears to be a problem in training, but I'm sure they'll get more serious as the week's progress (if they survive tonight).

The judges may have been critical but Felicity agrees that they know what they are talking about.  Felicity tells how she has absolutely no dance training in her past.

Wednesday 6th October

Matt Baker and Gavin Henson were the top scoring boys from their respective days (though Scott scored higher than Gavin on the Friday).  I saw Countryfile for the first time the other day, an interesting program but I can't imagine how they fit all the training in around the country.

Gavin loved the Waltz, but isn't feeling confident about the Salsa.  He must be happy now he gets the spray-tans included.  Katya says "If there's any person that can bring someone out of their shell, that's me"

A VT follows comparing the two girls hard training regimes for the boys though I think Matt seems to be having the harder time.

A clip of the Foxtrot starts well but I'm hoping Matt was just marking out.  Claudia struggles to compliment a clip of Gavin's Salsa.

Dance Psychology

Emma already thinks this guy's a little crazy.  Some interesting theories that are fairly standard if you are a dancer.

Pamela Stephenson clip is analysed but I can't hear what he's saying as their routine looks absolutely amazing!

Paul Daniels appears to be getting the steps but is really lacking in personality in the training video.

Goldie isn't looking particularly smooth in his Foxtrot and needs to keep his bum in.

Kara Tointon are described as the intense couple and really compatible.

Scott Maslen are keeping great eye contact, though I'm concerned that he doesn't look as good when he's on his own.

Tess Daly

Tess likes "her area" but wants an actual name to call it; Tess' Turret doesn't do the trick and I know (online at least) the old one was called the Tesspit!

This year's line-up is described as dynamite, and Matt was a massive surprise for Tess.  Jimi is the person that Tess feels is enjoying it the most.

Michelle Williams & Brendan Cole

A very poor performance from them I felt, now for some feedback.  I think Michelle had a bit of a reality check with the judges comments, and she does seem upset.  "I'm not expecting anyone to kiss my toosh" says Michelle, but a few positive comments would have been appreciated.

I thought my mum was bad with 4 sugars in her tea, but Michelle has 13 sugars in her coffee!!!  No wonder she's more than a little 'excitable' during training.

Thursday 7th October

Training Videos

Felicity is looking elegant in training, though is apparently struggling with remembering the correct foot to start with.

Tina talks about how she needs to hide her mistakes (rather than showing on her face) alternatively making no mistakes would be preferable!

Michelle should perform better in hold but Michelle is definitely looking like she's lost her confidence.

Matt is looking ok, nothing special just yet, but should give us a good dance.

Paul is looking incredibly tight and uncomfortable, I don't see him leaving the bottom of the table this week.

Goldie has a hat on, it doesn't suit him! Last week's Disco dance was a bad start but hopefully we'll see something better this time.

Jimi is looking like he's got the feeling of the Foxtrot in mind, I just hope they give him a better outfit this week.

Jimi & Flavia

Flavia feels that in her 5 years of Strictly, that was the best first dance that she's had.  We're also introduced to Flavia's teaching style (breaking the dances down into chunks).

Jimi found Foxtrot terrifying in the first two days, but I must admit the training is looking quite good.

Artem, Jared & Robin

Now a chat with the new boys of Strictly (The Sequin Team).

Artem wants to bring speed, energy and exciting moves.
Jared hopes to bring edge - still seems too nice.
Robin is energetic and powerful, and is here to win.

Artem might be good looking, but I'm not sure what the hat is all about!!!

Jared still isn't giving me any warm fuzzy feelings and I think he does need to come out of his shell more.

Salsa Training Videos

Pamela is looking as good, if not better, than her Waltz - not that James agrees.

Patsy needs to relax her shoulders, though she is looking much better this week.

Ann, the one I've definitely been waiting for, looks like her and Anton are going to perform a salsa to remember!

Gavin is hating the Salsa, though Katya wants to make it the sexiest Salsa Strictly's ever seen.

Scott needs to look like he's enjoying the dance more, there's not much emotion showing on his face.

Peter is hoping to save (see what I did there!) his place on the show this week.  Unfortunately it's really not looking good, should be entertaining though.

Peter Shilton & Erin Boag

Peter feels he showed his nervousness more than the other competitors last week.  He's looking forward to the Salsa this week, though his arms are a bit too free.

Friday 8th October

Scott Maslen & Natalie Lowe

Is it just me, or does Scott look like he's lost weight - that shirt looks a bit baggy on him.  Scott says he struggles with the dances at first, then something clicks and suddenly it makes sense.

Natalie seems a little down, wonder if training isn't going well?

Tina O'Brien & Jared Murillo

Tina is enjoying it but again talks about how she needs to not show mistakes on her face.

Jared says that Foxtrot was originally like Chinese to Tina, now it's getting more like English.  Come on Jared bring some personality out on screen please!!!

Superfans

Louise Redknapp, Chris De Burgh and Craig Revel-Horwood are on to analyse the training.

Gavin: Craig thinks he's looking a bit stuck in the mud; their music is a bit too 'pumpy' for my liking; Louise and Chris like it.

Kara: "I don't want to be known in this competition as the girl that falls over"; Craig - she's looking great as long as she doesn't fall over; their song almost sounds like a Waltz, such a strange choice I'm assuming they'll have a better arrangement.

Ann: Performing behind a curtain doesn't react well to Anton's joking.  No Salsa training in site though.  Craig doesn't look impressed - he doesn't pre-mark and wants them to dance; The music 'Hey Mambo' is a bit too slow I'm concerned.

Matt: Sounds like they're going to have a few more gimmicks this week, unfortunately; Craig - they're gorgeous to watch, he has great feet; music could be great.

Pamela: Looking A-MAZ-ING.  Craig describes it as knockout, with Pamela looking like a 20-year-old; the song should work well, though I'd have preferred something with a more recognised beat.

Michelle: Looking better but needs to watch her left shoulder.  Craig - it's O K,  doesn't think it's perfect and her body shape is probably better suited to Latin; great choice of music (It Had To Be You, one of my favourites!)

Peter: Looking very flat-footed with minimal 'natural' hip action.  Craig thinks he needs a hip replacement and a lot more energy.

Sneak Peak

Claudia takes us onto the set.  James and Artem having a push-up contest, Artem lifting his leg just to make it more difficult.  Claudia does need to learn how to walk up stairs quietly!

Vincent is wearing a nice pair of Tango Duo shoes, one of my favourite pairs.  Felicity and Vincent talk about the pressure of knowing someone goes home this weekend.

Not sure on their song choice but it does look quite good.

Anyway that's the week's summary, I need to get on with watching the actual show now!

Strictly Come Dancing week 1 summary

If you missed my comments on the show you can catch up below!

Felicity Kendal & Vincent Simone - Cha Cha Cha

Felicity was struggling in training with wearing high heels, and they did appear to be particularly high in the vids, but I'm hoping she's got past that.

Felicity is definitely more flexible than I was first expecting, but there's an awful lot of time wasting at the start and she does look a little uncomfortable.  I would prefer to see a bit more hip action and some thought to what she is going to do with her hands when not in hold, as they tend to just be held not really doing much.

I've seen worse first dances but I do feel there could have been a bit more there.  Would have to give it a 6 I think.

As I mentioned in the training video I do think Vincent had his hand too high on Felicity's back during the Natural Top (probably to have greater control over her) and Craig picks up on the raised shoulder in his comments.

Judges scores are:

Craig: 4
Len: 5
Alisha: 7
Bruno: 7

Giving a first dance score of 23 (just shy of an average 6 - I'm off to a good start this year it seems!)

Scott Maslen & Natalie Lowe - Waltz

We might not be able to see it, but Scott has purportedly got a two-tone nether region, thanks to a spray-tan g-string malfunction.  Let's hope it doesn't affect his Waltz abilities too much!

The start looks a little wooden in terms of the interaction between them - Scott's doing the actions but I don't feel any emotion behind them.

However he does have a very good shoulder line once they're in hold but I just don't like it, it doesn't feel like a Waltz to me.  There just appears to be a bit too much running around and not enough actual Waltz for my liking, also there's a start, middle and finish out of hold...something I don't think Len will appreciate.

Not a bad start though, much better than I expected and I'm going to give it a 7.

Judges scores are in:

Craig: 6
Len: SE - VEN
Alisha: 8
Bruno: 8

Total score: 29

Goldie & Kristina Rihanoff - Cha Cha Cha

Goldie spent a lot of time in training playing around, now's the time to see whether he's taken things a bit more seriously for the live show.

Not a bad use of hips at the start, and though it's not really a Cha Cha I kinda like it.  A bit too Disco all round though really but it does show that Goldie has a little bit of potential.

Whilst Goldie can move and shake it I think he'll only get a 5 due to the un-Cha Cha-like choreography.

Judges appear to agree with me, now let's see how they score it:

Craig: 3
Len: 6
Alisha: 6
Bruno: 5

Total score 20

So three for three on my score predictions so far, let's see how long I can keep this up!

Patsy Kensit & Robin Windsor - Waltz

So our first chance to see what one of the new boys can achieve in the show, training looked promising so let's see what they can produce.

Liking the lighting options, and song choice.  Girls always have it better dancing Ballroom with a pro dancer and straight away this looks better than Scott's, though Patsy's shoulder line needs some work.

She didn't look entirely confident at the start, and the slip during the pivots certainly didn't help.  Overall a nice start but severely lacking in confidence, made to look much better by Robin.  Work on the posture Patsy and we should see significant improvement.

A shame but I think I can only give it a 6 this week I'm afraid Patsy.  Interesting to see her fall up the stairs to Tess's area, Emma thinks maybe the skirt has something to do with it.

Craig: 4
Len: 6
Alisha: 6
Bruno: 6

Total Score: 22

Matt Baker & Aliona Vilani - Cha Cha Cha

Matt's gymnastic history should give him a distinct advantage, and his training video looked very promising.

Oh and there's the gymnastics already making an appearance, shame he's not as steady on his feet when crouching before Aliona!  Nice hip action though.

For me the hands are a little too 'flung out' though there's some nice finishing at times.  Definitely the best Cha Cha we've seen tonight though he should probably keep palms facing downwards rather than upwards - makes it look a little 'here's my chest ladies' and the shoulder movement makes it look a bit dad dancerish!

However a very impressive first dance, too early for an 8 personally but a high 7!

Judges are going to like this I think...

Craig: 7
Len: 8
Alisha: 8
Bruno: 8

Total Score: 31

Pamela Stephenson & James Jordan - Waltz

I was very impressed with Pamela in the launch show and I'm expecting great things tonight.

Emma likes the dress, and apparently grey's a good colour on James...I don't know, I'm just looking at the dancing!

Impressive to see them starting the movement out of hold, and Pamela looks good.  I think her chin's just a little too high but this is looking to be the best (and a very impressive) Waltz.

I don't like to hand out high marks too early, but I can't give that anything less than an 8!!!

I've felt in the run-up that this could be one of the best Strictly's yet and I'm so glad that no-one is leaving this week as everyone is looking really good!

I like it, Emma likes it, Judges like it, but what do they score?

Craig: 7
Len: 8
Alisha: 8
Bruno: 8

Total Score: 31

Paul Daniels & Ola Jordan - Cha Cha Cha

Out of the starting line-up for tonight I'm afraid Paul has me the most worried, I'm hoping he can prove me wrong, but I doubt it...

Quote of the night - Emma "Ah, he's not doing awfully".  I must admit it's no John Sergeant and for 72 he's definitely not putting on a bad show.  I do think he's been brought in for the sympathy vote though.

Not an embarassment but by no means the best Cha Cha tonight.  Lucky to get 5's I think.

Craig: 2
Len: 5
Alisha: 5
Bruno: 4

Total Score: 16

Jimi Mistry & Flavia Cacace - Cha Cha Cha

One of my front runners based on the training videos, let's see if he can live up to my expectations.

Bit of a strange shirt choice, looks a little too big for Jimi and does nothing for his movement.  He can certainly move but I'm not happy with his hands and I think his shoulders need to be looked at.  Overall I'm a little bit disappointed but it wasn't a bad performance.

I think he will probably get 7's though.

Craig: 6
Len: 7
Alisha: 6
Bruno: 7

Total Score: 26

Peter Shilton & Erin Boag - Waltz

Peter needed to work more on his shoulder line in training so I'm hoping Erin has drilled it into him.

Peter needs to keep his bum in, and try to keep his feet in contact with the floor when he opens to promenade - seems to have a tendency to life his foot quite high off the floor.  Much better shoulder line, though he looks a little bit awkward at times.

A better performance than I expected but I think it'll only get a 6 I'm afraid.

Craig: 4
Len: 6
Alisha: 6
Bruno: 5

Total Score: 21

Michelle Williams & Brendan Cole - Cha Cha Cha

We didn't really see much of Michelle's dancing during the training videos so will be interesting to see what Brendan has come up with.

Interesting to see them starting on the new bridge...though I have no idea what Michelle is wearing!  I feel Michelle looks a little brittle and could do with straightening the knees more.  There was energy there but it just seemed a little messy.

I'm going to say a 6, but with potential for improvement.

Craig: 5
Len: 6
Alisha: 7
Bruno: 6

Total Score: 24

I know why they've brought Alisha in for a specific reason, but dancing know-how it ain't!  No offence to Michelle but that performance was not worth a 7.

Gavin Henson & Katya Virshilas - Waltz

Gavin should perform better at Ballroom than Latin and the beginning (albeit looking like he's trying to break Katya's neck) looks calm and controlled. However Katya is right, there isn't much emotion showing, though it's good to see him smiling throughout.

A sweet performance that I'm struggling to mark, not quite a 7 but a high 6 I'd say.

Craig: 6
Len: 8
Alisha: 7

Maybe I was a little harsh but it does bode well for the future Gavin.

Tina O'Brien & Jared Murillo - Cha Cha Cha

I'm hoping Jared has settled in now as he looked completely out of place in the launch show.  A very strange start and I'm not a big fan of all the props in week one.  Some quite nice leg action but the routine isn't really doing it for me and Tina needs to use the floor more to generate better hip action.

An ok start but disappointing overall, just a 6 really and I think that's being generous.

I'm sorry Len but I think you're being overly generous with that 7.

Ann Widdecombe & Anton Du Beke - Waltz

Most people have put Ann & Anton in the comedy act pile and I think the height difference is definitely going to be an issue.  Interesting to see Ann wearing what appear to be practice shoes with laces, should give her a bit more stability.

Ann needs to keep her head up, and her feet down but it is a sweet performance.  Her Latin will be interesting but a good performance, far above I think most people's expectations.

Only a 5 I'm afraid but I think it could go downhill from here a la John Sergeant.

Craig: 2
Len: 5
Alisha: 5
Bruno: 5

Total Score: 17

Craig very harsh there, I don't think that deserved a 2.

Kara Tointon & Artem Chigvintsev - Cha Cha Cha

The tipped 'hot couple' there should be lots of chemistry there, and Artem impressed me in the training videos so I'm expecting great things, even if there is a dominatrix theme apparently going on there.

A fall there from Kara, I hope she hasn't injured herself,  she does look in a lot of pain.  Good to see that Artem has worked on her arms and they look a lot better.  She needs to keep her neck straighter, she seems to be sticking her chin a bit forward near the end.

A good performance though and I think she'll get 7's.

Strictly Come Dancing - Saturday 2nd October Leaderboard

Combined leaderboard for both nights therefore is:

1. 31 points - Matt & Aliona
1. 31 points - Pamela & James
3. 30 points - Kara & Artem
4. 29 points - Scott & Natalie
5. 28 points - Gavin & Katya
6. 26 points - Jimi & Flavia
7. 24 points - Michelle & Brendan
7. 24 points - Tina & Jared
9. 23 points - Felicity & Vincent
10. 22 points - Patsy & Robin
11. 21 points - Peter & Erin
12. 20 points - Goldie & Kristina
13. 17 points - Ann & Anton
14. 16 points - Paul & Ola

Overall the scoreboard is as expected, though I wouldn't have put Goldie down there before the show started, it was a pretty awful excuse for a Cha Cha Cha I'm afraid.

Some work required there if some of those down the bottom want to remain in the competition.

It Takes Two - Monday 4th October

So the new series of Strictly Come Dancing is in full swing and we have our first episode of It Takes Two with Claudia Winkleman.

A funny video clip of Kara before the show saying "I just don't want to fall over" and then Erin Boag trying to sabotage Gavin Henson.  Finishing with Kara falling over in her now infamous dominatrix outfit.

First up is Paul Daniels & Ola Jordan.  Paul said on his blog recently that he'd never seen Strictly before going on and thought that the show was about learning to dance Ballroom and Latin American, rather than learning to "Showdance".  That's why he was so surprised with the backlash of critiques from the judges.

Add to that the controversy surrounding Paul's 'sausage-gate' comment (those who follow the judges/pro's/celebs on twitter will have known in advance that Craig is King of the Sizzle for British Sausage Week); and Paul didn't exactly have a great weekend.

I think Paul will cope much better with the Foxtrot than his Cha Cha Cha and I'll let you know my thoughts once I've seen some training videos.

Next up is Craig Revel-Horwood, the archetypal panto judge.  Craig agrees that this year is a a great year for potential, and is looking forward to a lot more 'armography'.  For me Pamela Stephenson's Waltz was better than Matt Baker's Cha Cha Cha but both definitely deserved to be at the top.

Goldie's dance lacked a lot in the Cha Cha Cha department but there should be room for improvement, Ann's biggest downfall is going to be Salsa this weekend...but seeing as they're on the show later I'll talk more about them then.

Craig then analyses Michelle Williams, someone for me who looks far too thin, and coupled with her (as Craig puts it) 'stick insect' look she really underperformed at the weekend with a lack of hip action and control.  I would have expected something a lot sexier and rythmical from her.

Peter Shilton gave a good performance, that did seem a bit timid, but overall Erin did a really good job with him.

Craig thought that Kara Tointon was a little bit 'tame'...was he expecting whips and a paddle???  He's desperate to see Ann's Salsa, as we all are I'm sure.

Last year's winner Chris Hollins comes on and gives us a football style analysis of this year's competitors...which mainly consists of a brief intro and a few VT's that we didn't see on the live show...other than that it seems a fairly pointless section of the show.

Now for Ann Widdecombe and Anton Du Beke, Ann describing herself as 'Dumbo the elephant' raises a titter.  Anton is his usual on-screen charming self, pointing out that they had to remove the gymnastics from their routine so that they didn't appear to be copying Matt Baker.

It's Ann's birthday today and she gets some special birthday messages from Kenneth Clarke MP, a few other MP's who I've never heard off, Edwina Currie and David Blunkett.  Sweet but surely BBC could've have stretched to a cake and a rendition of Happy Birthday from Anton & Craig...

Salsa from Ann is apparently going to feature things that shouldn't even be in a salsa; "Waltz" quips Anton.

Now that I've got my daily dose of It Takes Two out of the way, and the trailer for So You Think You Can Dance has not inspired me to apply, I best go get ready for our classes tonight...Viennese Waltz and Salsa (ironic really) coming up.

See you tomorrow!
